John Pawson

Born in 1949 in Halifax, Yorkshire, John Pawson trained as an architect age 30 before establishing his own practice in 1981. He has always pursued the notion of simplicity and plain space in architecture and has worked across a variety of historical and cultural contexts. Commissions include designing the flagship store for Calvin Klein in New York , a Cistercian monastery in France and the RIBA prize-winning Sackler Crossing over a lake at London's Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew.

Since 2001, Swarovski Crystal Palace has presented groundbreaking design projects by world-leading designers using the exquisite crystal medium.

Conceived and developed by Nadja Swarovski, Swarovski Crystal Palace has challenged designers including Zaha Hadid, Ron Arad, Tom Dixon, Ross Lovegrove, Tord Boontje, Arik Levy , Yves Béhar and John Pawson to experiment with crystal to create radical new concepts in lighting, art and design.

Nadja Swarovski says: "Swarovski Crystal Palace began as a mission to reinvent the chandelier for the 21st Century and quickly evolved into a fascinating journey of discovery. As each project unfolded, innovations in science and technology brought extraordinary possibilities to lighting, electronics, design, art and architecture. As an incubator for new ideas, Swarovski Crystal Palace continually pushes the boundaries of traditional design."

St Paul's Cathedral

The masterpiece of architect and astronomer Sir Christopher Wren, St Paul's Cathedral overlooks the City of London as a constant reminder of the importance of the spiritual side of life.

Since it was completed in 1710 art has inspired and illuminated St Paul's and the Christian faith, providing a focus for reflection, meditation and contemplation for visitors. Installations by Antony Gormley, Mark Alexander and now John Pawson have enriched the daily pattern of worship and study in the cathedral.
